New Malton Review

new_malton1.jpgThe second event of the season for the Disabled  Golf Society was held at New Malton Golf Club on Wednesday 13/4/2011.

After a warm welcome from Carl Weininger and Paul Stephenson from the club along with a warming coffee, all the competitors headed for the driving range for tuition. We were fortunate to have Senior Pro David Llewellyn working alongside resident Master Pro Brian Mudge. The Disabled Golf Society held two events at New Malton last year and know how accommodating they have always been for disabled players.

There was much optimism that summer had arrived early as the weather in the previous week had been glorious, but alas players were faced with leaden skies, a very cold wind and the threat of afternoon rain. It was decided to beat the weather and head for the course.

Ten disabled members including Eastender’s actor David Proud; we also attracted our first international competitor, Andreas John from Germany. Julie Fernandez, actress from The Office and Eldorado, came along to lend her support.

County Development Officer, John Harvey, came along to find out how our disabled events are organized. Steve Conroy was caddying for his son, Jake 15, and said it had been “a really great day, very well organized indeed”.

The competition itself was won by Tucker Chance (all the way from North Wales) with a Stableford score of 20 points, second was Andreas John (19) and third was Keith Dolman (16). Three new members enjoyed their first event, some not having played in years due to their disabilities; one of these was Ian Skelly who received a special prize when he birdied the par-5 8th hole.

A great day was had by all and special thanks to Paul, Carl, Brian and John at New Malton and to David Llewellyn for lessons on the range and coming onto the course to give all competitors advice for improving their game.

About New Malton Golf Club

New Malton Golf Cub is set amongst 230 acres of peaceful Cambridgeshire countryside, yet only 8 miles from Cambridge city centre. Originally designed in consultation with Bruce Critchley, former Walker Cup Player and BBC commentator, New Malton Golf Club 18 hole golf course slopes softly down towards and beyond the picturesque River Cam.

Opened in 1994, the 6708 yards par 72 gently undulating course provides a stiff test for the seasoned golfer, from the back tees, whilst still posing an interesting challenge for golfers of all abilities, from the forward tees. Constructed to USGA specifications, together with extensive drainage and irrigations off all fairways, the course provides excellent playing conditions throughout the year. New Malton’s signature hole is the par3 14th, a daunting shot through trees and over a stream that diagonally fronts the green. With it’s continued programme of development, New Malton Golf Club has had an amazing 30,000 players plus visiting since its opening.
