woodham8.jpgOur first DGS event in the North East to attract new members and generate awareness that disabled people can enjoy and play golf was held at Woodham GC at Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham on Weds 18th May 2011. After an early downpour of rain the weather was glorious, albeit very windy – but it blew the cobwebs away! We joined up with The Stroke Association from Newcastle and Momentum Brain Injury Services from Yorkshire who came along (in force) to support the day, see how things are organised, and see what is possible with the right advice/equipment.

In the morning we also ran taster sessions (for 45 people!) for those who were either new to golf or seeing if they could play again – such as Steve who had a stroke 5 years ago which still effects one of his arms. Innovations groups attended from local day centres for youngsters (and relative youngsters) from – South Hetton, Spenney, Shildon, Keepier Hall and Auckland (so a BIG HELLO! to all of you). We met such lovely people and they got so much from their golf experience. First there was tuition with Senior Pro, David Llewellyn and competition on the putting green with a lovely lunch enjoyed by all. Sam and Anne at Woodham GC looked after us all amazingly well. DGS would like to thank Durham County Council and the English Golf Partnership for their support for the taster sessions. Then DGS members played the first 9-holes with some travelling from as far afield as Sheffield, North Wales, Berkshire and Gloucestershire!

Our thanks for the day go to Woodham GC and members for their patience with us, Alli and friends from the Stroke Association, Claire, a physio student who volunteered her services on the day as did David Llewellyn and Graeme’s lovely wife Sue.
