Our second DGS event in the North East to attract new members and generate awareness that disabled people can enjoy and play golf was held at Thirsk and North Allerton Golf Club on Tuesday 12th July 2011. DGS Senior Pro, David Llewelyn, was returning home to Thirsk after having been the Pro at the club many years earlier in his career. So after some expert tuition from David, the players headed to the 1st tee. First to tee off was current one-arm world champion, Darren Grey, from Darlington. The course was excellent, challenging but fair, in immaculate condition.
The 18 hole competition was won by Maurice Lee from Sheffield with a Stableford score of 32, the 9-hole Competition winner was Richard Aisthorpe (MS) from Sheffield (21 points); 2nd was Graeme Robertson (MS) from Berkshire (17 points); and 3rd Dave Standing (Amputee) from Wigan (14 points); the hidden hole competition was won by Kevin Booth (Arthritis) from Huddersfield. The day was supported by members from The Stroke Association and thanks to the generosity of Motocaddy, and Mizuno, who donated prizes, members of the club and DGS members, £155 was raised for The Stroke Association. Because of the interest shown in the area there is sure to be another event organized again soon.
The Disabled Golf Society would like to thanks Thirsk and Northallerton GC, and in particular Captain Ian Stevenson, Secretary Trevor, and all the staff and members for their patience with us.
