beacon_park_5.jpgOur first DGS event in the North West to attract new members and generate awareness that disabled people can enjoy and play golf was held at Beacon Park GC near Skelmersdale on Wednesday 1st June 2011. The weather was dry and bright, so after some expert tuition with Senior Pro, David Llewellyn the players headed to the 1st tee. The course was excellent, challenging but fair, with stunning views over Liverpool and a distant Blackpool Tower.

Graeme Robertson, National Events Co-Ordinator for DGS said “When I was diagnosed with MS and couldn’t balance or stand so well, and with a general weakness all down my right side, I thought my playing days were behind me. After being a keen sportsman, if you’d asked me what I missed the most since my diagnosis it would be not playing golf. 12 years later here I am returning to golf and all the stronger for it, having improved my core strength and concentration”. He went on “My thanks to Beacon Park GC (particularly Mark Prosser, Gary the pro and all the staff plus all the members for their patience with us, and thanks to David Llewellyn and my lovely wife Sue. “

The 18 hole Stableford competition was won by Tucker Chance with 31 points, with Stan Flinn 2nd (27) and George Ridley 3rd (26). Competitors travelled from all over the North West, there were people attending who were amputees, had polio, arthritis, and MS; everyone had a great day.
