A few showers did not dampen the enjoyment of DGS’s first event of the year. The day started earlier than usual, as we were featured on The Andrew Peach Breakfast show for BBC Radio Berkshire (and got the opportunity of meeting Maggie Philbin of ‘Multi – Coloured Swap Shop’ and Tomorrow’s World fame).
The morning’s golf was split into 2 sections – some braved the showers for 9-holes, while the others had tuition from Nick Slimming (resident Pro at Bird Hills) and then a 9-hole putting competition won by Dave Wilkinson with an impressive score of 18. After lunch all the players played the front nine of Bird Hills, aided by volunteers from the ‘Nifty-fifties’ (Seniors from Bird Hills GC) who were caddies imparting valuable local knowledge. The winner was newcomer Lorraine White who despite having MS played superbly to card a Stableford score of 24 points, Paul Hammond, recovering from a stroke, was 2nd (19 points), and Jan Bloomer, playing from WAMDSAD, came 3rd (18 points).
Paul Hammond was attending his first DGS event and summed it up perfectly:
“Just wanted to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed today and particular thanks to the (Nifty fifties) this afternoon who all made superb helpers/buggy drivers. I thought the whole day was very well organised and I still can’t quite believe that I managed to win a prize. I am very proud and pleased with that. I am already looking forward to the next (my next local event). Many thanks and very kind regards to you all”.
Everyone had a great time and DGS are already looking forward to the next event at New Malton on Wednesday 13th April; we hope to see you there, it really is a great day!
