isle_of_wight_08.jpgThe second annual DGS event on the Isle of Wight to attract new members, generate awareness that disabled people can enjoy and play golf was held at Ryde Golf Club on Thursday 22nd September 2011. In 2010 it was very wet in the morning, 2011, however, we were treated to Ryde in all it’s splendor with a glorious sunny and warm day, very rare this summer!

After tuition from DGS professional David llewylln the players headed for the first tee. Players had travelled from far afield to help generate awareness on the Isle of Wight. Many players travelled over from the mainland to have a few days break and there were islanders playing for the second year running. Peter Hunt, the president of the club, and members were very helpful acting as caddies and all were very welcoming.

The winner of the 9 hole competition was newcomber Stephen Long from Dorset with 22 stableford points, 2nd was Gina Collier from Northampton (13) ahead on countback from Stuart Ralph from Aldershot (also 13).

The 18 hole competition was won by Paul Cunningham from South London with 33 points, 2nd was David Cooksley from Nottingham (30) and 3rd was Keith Dolman from Essex (22points)

Graeme Robertson, National Events Co-Ordinator for DGS said “When I was diagnosed with MS and couldn’t balance or stand so well, and with a general weakness all down my right side, I thought my playing days were behind me. After being a keen sportsman, if you’d asked me what I missed the most since my diagnosis it would be not playing golf. 12 years later here I am returning to golf and all the stronger for it, having improved my core strength and concentration”. He went on “My thanks to Ryde GC which has to be the most welcoming club that we have visited. Many thanks to Peter Hunt, Chris and members for their patience with us – we shall certainly looking to return again next season.”
