parc_golf_club_11.jpgA DGS event in South Wales to attract new members, generate awareness that disabled people can enjoy and play golf was held at Parc Golf Club on Tuesday 26th September 2011. After tuition from visiting Pro, Gavin Evans from Pontnewydd Golf Club  the players headed for the first tee. Players had travelled from locally to far afield to help generate awareness in the South Wales area that disabled people can play and enjoy golf – as well as the therapeutic benefits of taking part in such a social occasion.

Peter Morgan from Hereford, stroke survivor who is blind as a result of a stroke, attended with life-long friend and caddie, Garth; Peter was delighted to find he had just been selected by the DGS to be in the England disabled team.

Graeme Robertson, National Events Co-Ordinator for DGS said “ When I was diagnosed with MS and couldn’t balance or stand so well, and with a general weakness all down my right side, I thought my playing days were behind me. After being a keen sportsman, if you’d asked me what I missed the most since my diagnosis it would be not playing golf. 12 years later here I am returning to golf and all the stronger for it, having improved my core strength and concentration”. He went on “My thanks to Parc Golf Club and the members for their patience with us – the course and the food was excellent”

The 18 hole competition was a clean sweep for Wales, the winner was Nicky Jones from Brecon with 35 stableford points, 2nd was Peter Morgan, originally from Wales (33) and 3rd was Peter Light from Cardiff(30)

Thank you for the support of Luis Evans from Newport City Council
