Our first Disabled Golf Society (DGS) event in South Wales to attract new members and generate awareness that disabled people can enjoy and play golf was held at The Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club on Tuesday 9th August 2011. It was a dry day, rare in summer 2011, and after tuition from The Vale/ DGS resident pro David Llewellyn at the driving range, we set off for the first tee. The Lakes course was in fantastic condition, and really interesting to play on.
Members travelled from far afield and many different physical abilities. New members included Nicky Jones and Tony Davies, both from South Wales, and blind golfer Peter Morgan from Hereford. Regular members travelled from Chepstow, Herts, Surrey, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and as far as Wigan, Southampton, Essex and Kent.
The winner of the 9 hole Stableford competition was amputee Mark Walters all the way from Folkestone, Kent with 20 points, second on countback was Keith Wallace from Chepstow (14 ) and third was Nicky Jones from Brecon (14).
Thanks to David Llewellyn, Dan Landsdowne and all the staff, plus the members of The Vale for their help and patience. The next DGS event as at Farrington Golf Club in Somerset on Monday 15th August, closely followed by New Malton on Thursday 18th August.

Wales National Golf Course
The Wales National is a UK golf course of distinction, one of the UK and Europe’s newest championship golf courses and – at 7,433 yards off the championship tees – it’s one of the longest golf courses outside of the USA. The golf course boasts some of the UK’s finest scenery, a mixture of mature wooded areas, wide and narrow fairways and vast water and bunker features, all set in the spectacular countryside of Wales.
The Lake Golf Course
A well-established and aptly named par 72 Lake Course – which has staged numerous Wales and West PGA professional championships – is dominated by a 20-acre lake and has water coming into play on 12 of its holes. Its 8th hole looks down over the largest heronry in Wales. Its unique signature hole, The Island Green (12th), is ranked one of the UK’s top golf holes.
