dewsbury_12.jpgTension was mounting at the 2 international qualifiers as 27 members of The Disabled Golf Society teed up to take their place in history, for the Inaugural England team to play against Scotland at Slaley Hall in October. “Both days were a little different from our normal, social event days. Everyone was friendly enough, but you could feel the tension at the first tee” said Graeme Robertson, National Events Co-Ordinator. “By the time we got to the 19th, people were coming back saying how badly they’d played trying to mask the fact they knew they’d all performed to their official handicaps, which is all you can ask. It’s going to be a tough job for the support team to make selections. The International will be a fantastic event to be a part of, being held at a top championship course, Slaley Hall in Northumberland”.

Regular events are held using Stableford scoring across England and Wales, but the Disabled Golf Society selected two venues for its members to try out for a coveted place on the team – at Downshire, Berkshire on 31/8 and at Dewsbury, Yorkshire on 5/9.

dewsbury_31.jpgThe winner of the Downshire event was Paul Cunningham from London (who won on count back with a score of 39); Christopher Smith (also 39, from Gloucestershire); and Kevin Booth (36, from West Yorkshire).

The winner of the Dewsbury event was Maurice Lee  from Sheffield (who won with a score of 35 points); 2nd was David Cooksley from Nottingham (34 points) and 3rd was Dave Standing from Wigan (31 points).

Everybody enjoyed the competitions, although the weather at Dewsbury was less than ideal (wet, windy and very cold)
The team for Slaley Hall will be announced after the event at Bromsgorve on 12th September 2011. A special thank you to Andrew Boyes from Brook Miller Mobilty Ltd for their sponsorship of the event at Dewsbury

About Dewsbury District Golf Club
Formed on 22nd October 1891. The course is built on land known locally as the “Pinnacle” Originally designed by Old Tom Morris himself, custodian of the Old course, St Andrews and Open Champion in 1861,62,64 and 1867. It was later made into an 18 hole layout by Ted Ray from Ganton in 1906 and further alterations were overseen by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in 1972. Some great course designers have left their mark on our course. It is set on the hillside above Mirfield in West Yorkshire. It offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The 18 hole course measuring 6,360 yards and with a par and SSS of 71, offers a true and fair test of your golfing ability, testing your length, accuracy, touch as well as your stamina over the part parkland and part moor land course. After playing why not visit our clubhouse, which was re built in 2001. Here you can experience some of our warm northern hospitality. We can provide food and beverage to satisfy your needs after your round or just call in to sample our hospitality.

It’s delightful setting, overlooking the course; with pleasant views from its elevated position help complete what we hope will be a memorable day.
