bromsgrove_08.jpgOur first DGS event in Worcestershire to attract new members and generate awareness that disabled people can enjoy and play golf was held at Bromsgrove Golf Centre on Thurs 8th September 2011.

After tuition from visiting Pro, Tim Shrosbree from Horsehey GC in Telford, 14 players headed for the first tee. Players had travelled from far afield to help generate awareness in the Worcestershire area that disabled people can play and enjoy golf – as well as the therapeutic benefits of taking part in such a social occasion. Disabilities included MS, Stroke survivors, Sight, Amputees, and others with mobility issues including Arthritis, Knee-replacements, and Heart conditions.

Joining them was Glen Roberts who is currently playing 60 golf courses in 60 days to raise money for the MS Society. Peter Morgan from Hereford, stroke survivor who is blind as a result of a stroke, attended with life-long friend and caddie, Garth; Peter was delighted to find he had just been selected by the DGS to be in the England disabled team.

Graeme Robertson, National Events Co-Ordinator for DGS said “Glen’s challenge must be unique and hope we can all join in sponsoring him via his justgiving.com/Glen-Roberts website. When I was diagnosed with MS and couldn’t balance or stand so well, and with a general weakness all down my right side, I thought my playing days were behind me. After being a keen sportsman, if you’d asked me what I missed the most since my diagnosis it would be not playing golf. 12 years later here I am returning to golf and all the stronger for it, having improved my core strength and concentration”. He went on “My thanks to Bromsgrove GC which has to be one of the most welcoming and best centres for people with disabilities that we’ve visited this year, and members for their patience with us – we shall certainly looking to return again next season.”

The winner was Brian Parsons from Leicester (Parkinsons) with 46points; second was Keith Wallace from South Wales (Amputee) 36 points; and third was Jacki Witt representing WAMDSAD from Maidenhead (MS) with 30 points.
